For healthcare professionals

BMS - British Menopause Society - the specialist authority for menopause and post reproductive health

The British Menopause Society (BMS) is the specialist authority for menopause and post reproductive health in the UK. Established in 1989, the BMS educates, informs and guides healthcare professionals, working in both primary and secondary care, on menopause and all aspects of post reproductive health.

This is achieved through:

  • Our Education Programme, which includes the BMS annual scientific conference, the WHC Annual Symposium on women’s health, BMS Masterclasses and BMS certificated education and training in the Principles & Practice of Menopause Care and in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for menopause symptoms.
  • Our interactive website which features BMS TV: the menopause explained and the online register of recognised BMS menopause specialists.
  • Our range of resources and publications including Joint Guidelines, Consensus statements, Tools for clinicians, BMS bulletins and news alerts,  the quarterly journal Post Reproductive Health and the definitive handbook Management of the Menopause.

Our mission

  • To increase awareness of post reproductive healthcare issues
  • To promote optimal management through our educational programme, publications and information dissemination

Our vision

The BMS Vision for menopause care in the UK, first published in July 2017, was prepared by Dr Heather Currie MBE, Kathy Abernethy and Mr Haitham Hamoda. It was most recently reviewed and updated in July 2024.

The BMS Vision, prepared in collaboration with the medical advisory council of the BMS, sets out the fundamental principles that should underpin menopause service provision. It will help to ensure that providers and commissioners are held to account and that all service users can access high quality menopause care as standard.
