I'm not a doctor but my wife had her hysterectomy and I tried to learn what I could about the procedure before we went ahead with her operation. There are three possible incisions. The first, and traditional incision, is vertical from the pubic bone upward toward the belly button. They go down through the muscles until they reach the uterus to remove it. The second is horizontal along the top of the pubic bone. The cut through the muscles until they reach the uterus to remove it.The third is through the vagina. They open the cervix and remove the uterus through that opening. If the ovaries are included, then they are removed through the same opening as the uterus. If the cervix is removed, then that is also done vaginally. The third method is the most recent and the easiest for recovery. However, the method used may well depend upon your state of health and the state of health of the organs to be removed. If there is a lot of endometrial tissue present, then the abdominal incision will be necessary for clean out purposes of the abdominal cavity. This is what happened to my wife. Endometriosis necessitated abdominal clean-out. This made her recovery longer. She lost a lot of blood and needed transfusions but she is all right now. In fact, she is in better health now than before the surgery.Best wishes.
