Your cervical usually does not have many nerve fibers, meaning that u will not feel the colposcopy procedure, even without any anesthesia or pain medications. Colposcopy procedures are quick and usually teh only thing you will feel is some abdominal cramps or pressure. However, if you want, you can ask your doc to prescribe some Motrin or Tylenol.

A colonoscopy is performed in your rectal cavity, not your cervix.A pap smear is performed annually to check for abnormal cells on your cervix. You do not receive pain medication for that, because it's only a little uncomfortable due to cold instruments, usually painless.

No, when u get a colposcopy you do not get pain meds!! This is one of my pet peeves. I have witnessed 2 colposcopies(1 in nursing school and the other was a relative) and both women were brought to tears. I don't care what the above post said, I saw 2 women almost come up off the table after the biopsy was taken, I wouldn't have one without pain/nerve medication. This is another example of healthcare providers missing the mark with patients.Good Luck:-)

I have had several colposcopies and they have never given me any medication, although they shoould. You should definately take some Ibuprofen before you leave for your appointment. It isn't pleasurable at all.

No. When I had a colposcopy several years ago my doctor told me to just take Tylenol. It was uncomfortable, but I don't remember it being extremely painful. I guess it depends on the individual and the doctor... I had the best doc in the city.

No. A close family member of mine had one yesterday and she didnt get any. She said the pain only lasted a minute or two, but it was as severe as when she had a tattoo on the top of her foot. I was there for that and she damn near cried! (she never cries from pain BTW) She also said she did get cramps as another answer mentioned. The so called "med student" that said the cervix has no nerve fibers needs to study harder! The female reproductive organs are some of the most enervated (full of nerves) tissues found in the human body. I hope he isnt going for OB/GYN
