Osteoporosis, which means "porous bones," causes bones to become weak and brittle — so brittle that even mild stresses like bending over, lifting a vacuum cleaner or coughing can cause a fracture. In most cases, bones weaken when you have low levels of calcium, phosphorus and other minerals in your bones.

A common result of osteoporosis is fractures — most of them in the spine, hip or wrist. Although it's often thought of as a women's disease, osteoporosis also affects many men. And aside from people who have osteoporosis, many more have low bone density.

The strength of your bones depends on their size and density; bone density depends in part on the amount of calcium, phosphorus and other minerals bones contain. When your bones contain fewer minerals than normal, they're less strong and eventually lose their internal supporting structure.

Three factors that you can influence are essential for keeping your bones healthy throughout your life:

* Regular exercise
* Adequate amounts of calcium
* Adequate amounts of vitamin D, which is essential for absorbing calcium-

osteoporosis is caused by a bacterial infection in the bone, usually staph.

The bacteria causes degredation of the bone, as does the immune response mounted by the body.

these two factors combined cause massive damage to the bone, which stimulates new growth, which is usually deformed.

this leaves the individual with lifelong scaring, some worse than others

Osteoporosis is often known as "the silent thief" because bone loss occurs without symptoms. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. Osteoporosis leads to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture. Osteoporosis does not develop overnight. You can lose bone mass steadily for many years without experiencing any symptoms or signs of the disease until a bone fractures.Women and men with osteoporosis most often break bones in the hip, spine, and wrist.

Hello waves,
Osteoporosis is a very common disorder, which results in an increase in fracture risk. The annual cost attributable to hip, vertebral, and wrist fractures ...
Recent advances in both the pharmacological and surgical treatment of osteoporosis and vertebral compression fractures offer exciting new options for elderly patients. However, these treatments should be considered only with an indepth knowledge of osteoporosis as a metabolic disorder with complex effects on bone, its homeostatic regulation, and vertebral strength. Bone homeostasis is under the influence of both endogenous hormonal changes and external mechanical loads resulting from physical activity. These impart their effects through regulation of the relative activities of bone cells, in particular osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which control bone deposition and resorption, respectively. The strength of a vertebra is directly influenced by the amount and relative proportions of its components, with bone mineral density a useful measure of fracture risk. The purpose of this article is to discuss these issues, among others, in order to offer the reader a better understanding of the pathophysiology of osteoporosis and the determinants of bone strength as they relate to the aging skeleton.

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become porous and weak, and therefore fracture easily. The bone tissue is normal with a normal shape but it has lost mass and density and so lacks sufficient strength to withstand the forces which normally occur in daily life. There are no symptoms initially and the condition is often diagnosed only when a bone fracture occurs unexpectedly. These fractures occur in a third of all women and in one in twelve men. Post-menopausal and senile osteoporosis are recognized.
